Dedication

This page is dedicated to all the people who were members and adult co-workers of Bethels in our state that for one reason or another, were closed.  A lot of love and hard work went in to these Bethels, and hopefully, someday, they may re-open.  This list is not complete.  As histories of closed Bethels are received, they will be added.

Bethel #2 used to perform musical shows, which Mom Meyer wrote and directed. Other activities included Line Officers Dinners, and a trip to the Show Boat, where the members performed. In 1930, the girls had a Halloween Party, and a picture and story about this was published in the St. Louis Star-Times Newspaper. Currently, Bethel #2 has about 30 active members. For the last 2 years, they have sold raffle tickets in order to fill Christmas Baskets for the needy. There was an article about this in the Community News. For the last 3 years, the girls have worked very hard supporting the St. Stephens Food Pantry, as well as man other charities. They visited the Masonic Home about 6 times a year, and looked forward to going and making friends with the residents. They were always ready to help whenever they are asked.  Unfortunately, due to declining membership, Bethel #2 closed in 2002.

Bethel #6

Bethel #6 of Webster Groves, Missouri was organized by Mother Falkenhainer, Guardian of Bethel #1. The Bethel went Under Dispensation on July 28, 1923, meeting at Webster Groves Temple on the first and third Saturday afternoons.  The Bethel was chartered on October 2, 1923 by Supreme Guardian, Effie Redman with 52 girls signing the charter. Mother Fritz was the first Bethel Guardian. The First Honored Queen was Josephine Eck.

The girls of Bethel #6 did many of the things our members do today. They went to many dances and parties with other Bethels and DeMolay Chapters, ran for DeMolay Queen, went swimming, roller skating, and had family picnics. Fund raisers included bake sales, card partied and variety shows. Buying Bethel robes for their growing memberships was a constant concern. they often borrowed "hats" from other Bethels to wear at initiation as they were short of the number they needed. Installations were organized and put on by the entire council. The choir and officers were often divided into opposing teams and challenged one another to petition drives and fund raising contests.

At some point prior to 1940, the Bethel began meeting on the first and third Thursday evenings at 8:00. in 1945, this was changed to 7:30.

To the best of my ability, the following is a listing of Bethel Guardians: Mother Fritz, 1923-19??, Mother Johannes ?-1931, Eileen Card, 1931-1935, Louise Achilles, 1935-1941, Eileen Card, 1941-1949, Julia Kendall, 1957-1964, Frances Lee (acting), 1964-1965, Virginia Winter, 1965-1966, Dorothy Fisher, 1966-1969, Genevieve Stones, 1969-1972, Frances Lee, 1972, Dorothy Fisher, 1972-1974, Ester Turner, 1974-1977, and Diane Haywood, 1977-1980.

To the best of my ability, the following is a listing of Associate Bethel Guardians: Dad Kriecheldt, 1923-19??, Dad Linde, 19??-1931, Edgar Wood, 1931-1949, Charles Graubner, 1949-1974, Clyde Benak, 1974-1977, and C. Dunham Henry, 1977-1980.

With much discussion and great sadness, the members of Bethel #6 requested permission to cease meeting in April, 1980. The Bethel had nine active members and the girls felt that they no longer represented a viable Bethel.  Bethel #6 held its final meeting on May 15, 1980. There were nine members, seven Past Honored Queens, seven Council members, and Grand Guardian, Karen Jordan, Associate Grand Guardian, Bill Wann, and supporters and visitors from several area Bethels. The Grand Guardian Council chose to close the Bethel to regular meetings, but leave the charter in the custody of Webster Groves Masonic Temple for future consideration. The girls had a final activity together in June, 1980. It was a trip to Six Flags. The members received demits to change Bethels. The last Honored Queen, Jo Ann Wilson was accorded the title of Past Honored Queen, and she and the Princesses received Past Queens and Past Princess Pins.

Bethel #13

Bethel #13 was chartered on October 24, 1925. They originally met at Euclid Hall in St. Louis, and later moved to Lambskin Masonic Temple in St. Louis. Their first activities were a Manufacturers Dinner, and a Handkerchief Booth held on November 18, 1925. The Daughters of the American Revolution presented them with a silk flag. Their first Bethel Guardian was Mildred Westerman.

Bethel #13 Addendum

The tables in the dining room were a pleasing sight, decorated in gold and white, with a gold colored candle holder holding a white candle and yellow and gold flowers on the tables. The table Grace was given by Mrs. Harriet Kreh, Supreme Chaplain, which was followed by a delicious dinner.

A cordial welcome was extended to all present by Kim Maxey, Honored Queen of Bethel #13, after which she turned over the program to "Mom" Peggy Zimmer.

"Mom" Zimmer expressed her joy in having so many present to share this occasion with us, and thanked each for coming. Quote: As our country's Bicentennial year is approaching, we reminisce in turning back the pages, realizing that for a fourth of that time period, Bethel #13 has been in existence. It isn't easy to maintain an Organization for 50 years - with the changing times and attitudes, but those who have never lost Faith in the principles of the Order, and held in their hearts the Motto, "Virtue is a Quality which highly adorns Womanhood", are present this evening, and I thank you for your presence.

Now if you will just bear with me - I'd like to review just a brief history of Bethel #13. Through the interest and untiring efforts of Mrs. Mildred Westermann, the Bethel was instituted September 25, 1925, and chartered October 24, 1925. The meeting place was at Euclid Hall, 4906 Natural Bridge Avenue. The first Guardian Council members were: Mrs. Mildred Westermann, Guardian, Mr. Merle Campbell, Associate Guardian, Mrs. Gretta Barsanti, Council Secretary, Mrs. Stella Schaub, Council Treasurer, Mrs. Lucy Wadlow, Director of Music.  Associate members, Adelene Grath and Charles Harbaugh. 39 Daughters names are listed on the Charted in this picture frame here on the pedestal.  From this beginning, one thousand sixty have knelt at the Altar, taken the Obligation, and been initiated into Bethel #13. Many of them have attained distinction in various fields of endeavor, including: professional, education, religious, and the time honored marriage and motherhood.

Many of the Daughters have brought honor to the Bethel in receiving appointments. Supreme Bethel Appointment, Grand Bethel Officers and Representatives. Carol Schreiner, PHQ, served as Grand Bethel Honored Queen. Betty LaTurno Huffman, PHQ, served as State DeMolay Queen, and many of our Daughters have been elected "Sweetheart Queens". Adults who have brought honor to the Bethel include: Mildred Westermann, Thomas Thiel, Edward Zimmer, Peggy Zimmer, and Howard Thiel, who advanced the Grand Guardian line to serve as State Officers.

Perhaps you will pardon me - if my pride is showing - not only for those who received special recognition, but also, for the council members and parents, who worked, supported the Daughters, and shared their triumphs and their joys.

Mrs. Mildred Westermann, the firs Guardian, who served for 25 years was followed my Mrs. Helen Althage, Miss Rena Vermes, Mrs. Peggy Zimmer, and our present Guardian, Mrs. Ethel Snelson. The first Associate Guardian was Mr. Merle Campbell, followed by Mr. Thomas Thiel, Mr. E. Pingel, Mr. Stanley Tollman, Mr. Edward Zimmer, Mr. Howard Thiel, and our present Associate Guardian, Mr. Don McWhorter. The Bethel has had four living Mascots, Fern Drescher, Carol Zimmer, Lisa LaTurno, and Lisa Leonard. (At the close of the meeting, the last three named mascots would stand in the open doors in the attitude of prayer, as the Officers and Members retired. This was a special distinction for Bethel #13.

50 years cannot be crowded into a few brief moments - but I'm sure each Bethel member present, has their own special memories, which they cherish. What a joy to remember - - "When I was in Bethel", the heritage you had or have to pass on to your own daughter.

We were so pleased to have 160 people in attendance, and the following were introduced: Charter Members, Marguerite Preis Landes, and Corona Barsanti Pohlmann, Kim Maxey, Honored Queen of Bethel #13, 45 Past Honored Queens, several Majority Members, Grand Bethel Member, Georgia Peek, Grand Bethel Junior Princess, Idakatherine Schenk, Supreme Guardian, Harriet Kreh, Supreme Chaplain, Arline Schmidt, Grand Guardian, John Darcy, Associate Grand Guardian, Virginia Goede, Grand Guide, Lt. Col. Jim Harbison, Grand Inner Guard, Elaine Hogg, Grand Librarian, Past grand, included, Wesley Kreh, Mildred Erler, Ernie Erler, Josephine Harvey, Albert Powell, Roy Partenheimer, Edward Zimmer, and W. Peggy Zimmer. (also, Kenneth Ireland, Grand Outer Guard.).

Bethel #13 members, Guardian, Ethel Snelson, Don McWhorter, Associate Guardian, Council Members and all visitors. All were thanked for sharing this special event with and many people shared happy memories of their "Bethel Days". All were invited to the Auditorium for a social hour and dancing. (a special highlight for my youngest Granddaughter, Lisa, who came running to man and said, "Grandma, I danced with the Supreme Guardian".)

This is just a thumbnail sketch of Bethel #13, but I am sure the lessons taught have been exemplified in the lives of many, many who knelt at the Altar and accepted the Obligation of the Order of the International Order of Job's Daughters.

Bethel #14

Bethel #14 was chartered on January 23, 1926. They met at Pomegranate Masonic Temple in St. Louis.

The Bethel Guardians of Bethel #14 included: Bernice Kreh, Virginia Mills, MM, Harriet Kreh, PHQ, and Helen Bardol.

The Associate Bethel Guardians of Bethel #14 included: Jack Mathers, William Schowalker, Reverend Leibner, Bill Roth, Oscar Crites, Wes Kreh, and Ron Bardol.

Idakatherine Schenk, a Past Honored Queen of Bethel #14, served as Grand Guardian, although her eligibility for this office came as a result of her serving as Bethel Guardian of Bethel #12.

Idakatherine Schenk served the Supreme Council as Supreme Guardian in 1975-1976. Bernice Kreh and Virginia Mills also served as Supreme Officers.

Bethel #14 was a quite large Bethel, having a full corps of officers, and a choir of 30 to 40 girls in regular attendance. Quite a rivalry (though a friendly one) developed as the membership of the Bethel was about evenly divided between Roosevelt and Cleveland High Schools. Bethel #14 and Pomegranate Chapter #3978, OES, were so closely related that most of the membership joined Pomegranate, and to this day it is still know as the Job's Daughter Chapter. As the movement of population gradually went to St. Louis County, the Bethel went into a decline, and finally it was decide to close the books on what was once an active, prominent Bethel with dedicated Council Members, and parents to support the daughters in their activities. Some of the remaining Daughters joined Bethel #19, but the majority went to Bethel #12. Bethel #12 accepted the opportunity to invite Bethels 10, 11, 13, and 14 to hold a reunion. They also invited them to both regular and Queens and Past Queens Meetings. Just recently is was necessary to weed from the mailing list those who no longer replied to invitations. To show how fully accepted Bethel #14 was in Bethel #12, many officers, and several became Honored Queen of Bethel #12.

Bethel #23 was merged with Bethel #46 on April 1, 1987. Bethel #23's charter was revoked on May 1, 1991.

Bethel #23 Addendum

Bethel #23 was instituted on May 17, 1941, and received their charter on September 27, 1941. 31 girls signed the charter. Bethel #21 initiated the new members, 5 demitted from Bethel #4, and one from Bethel #22. Jean Lageneckert was the charter Honored Queen, and she demitted from Bethel #4. She now lives in St. Peters, MO. Margaret Ross and Thomas Thiel were the Grand Guardian and Associate Grand Guardian respectively.

The Bethel met on the first and third Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. Through the years, the girls held bake sales, card parties, dinners, barbecues, and other activities to raise money to support the Bethel. For years, the Daughters colored Easter Eggs with the DeMolay at the home of Dad Gieselman (DeMolay Chapter Dad). On Easter Morning, they had an egg hunt at the Mothers and Babies Home for the children. Other fun activities included roller skating, hay rides, roasting hot dog and marshmallows, and dances. Every year ended with the Bethel going Christmas Caroling and having a taffy pull afterwards.

Two charter members, Mary Helen Stevenson Petracek (6'th Honored Queen) and Ann Graf Tisdale (9'th Honored Queen), remain active in the organization.  Mary has been on the Executive Guardian Council of Bethel #5 since 1984, and Ann has served as Guardian of Bethel #50, Grand Guardian, and is currently the Grand Treasurer.

On February 16, 1987, the Grand Guardian, Nelda Kaeser, instructed Bethel #23 and Bethel #46 of Berkeley to merge. This merge became effective on April 1, 1987. The Bethel struggled along for several years with a few girls, and on April 21, 1991, the Grand Guardian, Myrt Williams informed the Bethel that it would be closed on May 1, 1991, just 16 days prior to the 50'th anniversary of the Institution of Bethel #23.

Beverly Delany, the last Bethel Guardian, received the Past Guardian's Pin, and Renee Elfrank, PHQ of Bethels #40 and 23, received the #23 guard for her PHQ pin. Renee had demitted from Bethel #40, and had given a lot of support to Bethel #23.

Bethel #23 had a display case at Ferguson Masonic Temple containing the Charter and other memorabilia until the sale of the Temple to the Ferguson-Florissant School District.  It is unknown what became of the display case.

The council and officers were constantly busy with plans for keeping the Bethel going strong.

Since 1945, over 480 girls had been entered into the permanent record book.  The Charter Honored Queen was June Jinkerson Baker. Throughout all the years of Bethel #25, the basic core of belief in God and sisterhood never wavered.  In 2002 Bethel #25 was merged with Bethel #36 of Bonne Terre, Missouri.

Bethel #30

Bethel #30 of Kirksville, Missouri was chartered on November 15, 1948. The Charter Honored Queen was Mary Anna Truitt.

The Bethel Guardians of Bethel #30 have included Cleo Hayden and Judy Howerton.

The Associate Bethel Guardians of Bethel #30 have included John L. Murdock and Ron Miller

At Bethel #30's charter meeting, Mrs. Nina M. Lee, Grand Guardian, presented them with their charter, and declared them to be duly chartered. They read 5 petitions at that meeting. There were 38 charter members. One of the charter members, Rebecca Miller Still, was Honored Queen in 1952, and her daughter, Rachel Still, was Honored Queen in 1991. At a meeting of the Bethel U.D. held on July 19, 1948, Maridonna Shahan made a motion that the bethel caps be in the form of a tight fitting beanie, made of white satin, with a purple J.D. on them.  The motion passed. A report was also given on a picnic held at the country club.  As you can see, over the years some things changed, while some things did not.  Unfortunately the Bethel struggled and in 2002 they were closed.

Bethel #31

When Brentwood Lodge #616 A.F. & A.M. and Brentwood Chapter #429 O.E.S., began forming in 1949, Winnie Mastin who lived in Brentwood felt the time was right to form a Job's Daughters Bethel. This effort was started by knocking on doors in Brentwood and asking if they had girls between the ages of 12 and 20 who would be interested in forming a Job's Daughters Bethel.

Organizational meetings and practices were held in the basement of Rose and Louis Rick's home. Their daughter, Betty Rick Dilthey was a Charter Member, and Honored Queen in 1952. Their Granddaughter, Lauga Dilthey Richardson was Honored Queen in 1979. Rose Rick served as Guardian Secretary when the Bethel was formed.  The Bethel was instituted on June 16, 1949 by Mrs. Martha Gatzert, Grand Guardian, and Mr. Hermon Kost, Associate Grand Guardian. The officers were initiated and installed by Bethel #19. The first Honored Queen was Mary Catherine Asselmeier, and she transgerred to the new Bethel from Bethel #6. The Bethel was granted it's Charter on September 17, 1949, with 31 Charter Members.

Our first installation as Bethel #31 was held on Monday evening, December 19, 1949. The Bethel had 41 members. Seventeen members were initiated during 1950.

During the early days of the Bethel, we enjoyed kidnap breakfasts, slumber parties, dances and street car rides. We earned money by having card parties, booths at the Brentwood Lodge and Chapter Carnivals, and Barbecues. The most popular booth was the turtle races. We also participated in community celebrations by entering floats and having fund raising booths.

The Bethel first met in the Brentwood Congregational Church basement until the Brentwood Temple was completed. The Bethel moved to the Brentwood Temple in 1951. The Bethel continued to meet at the Brentwood Temple until November, 1994, when the Brentwood Temple was sold. The Bethel moved to Clayton Masonic Temple in December, 1994 and met there until the Bethel closed.

The Bethel Guardians of Bethel #31 included: Winifred Mastin, 1949-1958, Blanche Noecker, 1958-1963, Katherine Adams, 1963-67, Doramae Kalb, 1967-1969, Dorothy GIllespie, 1969-1970, Nancy Knarr, 1970-1974, Delores Miller, 1974-1976, Joy Bucker, 1976-1979, Regina Gahr, 1974-1985, Marie Earle, 1985-1988, Charlotte Ellis, 1988-1991, Regina Gahr, 1991-1993, Phyllis Boehme, 1993-1995,  Anne Newton, 1995-1996, Eva Pelak, 1997, and Melissa Stockton, 1997-1998.

The Bethel Guardians of Bethel #34 have included: Mary McClaskey, Irma Tetley, Mary Berghaus, Mrs. Hues Pratt, Virginia Baldwin, Zell Kassabaum, Robadine Large, Mrs. Wm. Lenz, Mary Hutson, Lucile Stotler, Delores Brooks, Dorothy Puckett, LaVerne Hutchison, Karen Budak, Wanda Rivituso, Yvonne Chance, Candace Grieshaber, Jessie Boyd, LaDonne Snavely, Linda Eaton, and Rita Ervin.

The Associate Bethel Guardians of Bethel #34 have included: Beryl Miller, J.E. Klein, Perry Morris, Mr. Gordon, Don Sanders, Harold Black, Frank H. Vernell McGee, Charles LeRoy Colvin, Frank Scydick, Stephen Dean, and Steven Monrotus.

One bit of interesting information concerning Bethel #34, is that Toddy Lovitt was an instrumental force in organizing the Bethel, and worked hard to keep it going, even though she never served on the Council. She passed away in 1979. Her husband, Claude, remarried a lady (Sarah) from Eldorado Kansas who was a PHQ, and Past Bethel Guardian of Bethel #8 in Kansas. She came onto the Council in July of 1992 as Guardian Director of Music, and he came back to the Bethel as the Bethel Grandpa until his passing. Sarah remained on the Council. It seem the Job's Daughters was truly a big part of their life.

In 1997, Bethel #34 was merged with Bethel #36.

In 2006, a new Bethel #34 was Chartered, but they have no connection with this version.  They are simply re-using an extinct number.

Bethel #37

In 1950, the small village known as Barry, Missouri, was a rural community which consisted of a small general store, a church, a Masonic Lodge, a graveyard and a well that had been used by travelers across the Lewis & Clark Trail for many years.  Rising Sun Lodge is the oldest continually operating Masonic Lodge west of the Mississippi River.  During the Civil War its members continued to attend lodge meetings, leaving their rifles outside since many were Union and many were Confederates.

The Lodge building itself was converted from a girls' school in the 1800's where girls were sent into town to live and attend school.  The building was not modern and was heated with wood or oil stove.  The bottom floor of the Masonic Lodge was still being used as a grade school in 1950.

The Past Matrons and Patrons of Barry Chapter #369 Order of Eastern Star were interested in starting a youth organization.  Since most of them had girls and since one of their members, Ruth Akin, was a Majority Member of Bethel #2 in Kansas City, Kansas, they made contact ith the Missouri Grand Guardian Council.

Bethel U.D. was instituted September 19, 1951, by Grand Guardian Ruth Mary Leavitt and was charted on February 21, 1952.  Twenty-six members were initiated as charter members.  Joan Wilson was installed Honored Queen but resigned prior to ending her term and the Senior Princess, Betty Jean Jensen was installed and is considered the first Honored Queen of Bethel #37.  The Guardian and Associate Guardians were Betty Lee Galloway and James Aikmus.  The Installing OFficer was Doris Veatch, PHQ #24 (also known as Doris Mielke).

In the early 1960's Bethel #37 had grown to about 60 members.  It was the only Bethel north of the river and had always attracted members from the entire area, including Liberty, Parkville and North Kansas City.  At that time, it appeared there were enough members from the Parkville area to support another Bethel and Bethel #52 was formed.

When the Rising Sun Lodge began its building fund to build a new lodge, Bethel #37 was there to contribute money, help with many, many fund-raiser events and when the Grand Lodge of Missouri laid the cornerstone, Bethel #37 became one of the few, if not the only, Bethels in the world to have a cornerstone of its own in a Masonic Lodge and to participate in the Grand Lodge dedication.

Unfortunately, after several years of declining membership, Bethel #37 voted to close its doors.  The final meeting of Bethel #37 was held on April 3, 2004.

Bethel #39

Bethel #39 of Crystal City was chartered on July 15, 1953. They have met at Shekinah Temple since their inception, although the temple has had 2 different locations. Originally it was located over the E & D Style Shop on Festus Main Street, Festus, MO, and since 1968, it has been located at Bailey and Virginia Roads, Crystal City. The charter Honored Queen was Elizabeth Gehrs Whaley.

Bethel Guardians of Bethel #39 have included: Donna Manners, Bessie Keats, Mildred Carpenter, Ruth Blum, Helen Wilson, vivian Nelson, Ilene Lambert, Ann Becker, Georgie Howard, Susan Glaze, 1982-1984, Linda LaBrier, 1985-1986, Elaine Bowles, 1986-1987, Patti Brand, 1987-1992, and Margaret "Maggie" Willson, 1992-1996

Associate Bethel Guardians of Bethel #39 have included: Charles Curd, Wilbur Gebauer, Elmo blum, Marvin Becker, Donald Propst, Alfred La Brier, Richard Blaylock, 1979-1985, Jim Bowles, 1985-1986, Richard Blaylock, 1986-1991, John Brand, 1991-1995, and Terry Wilson, 1995-Present.

When Bethel #39 was instituted, the Bethel was dedicated to the memory of Dad Fred Ehrhardt, PAGG, and PABG of Bethel #3 in St. Louis. The work was exemplified by Bethel #3. Elizabeth Gehrs Whaley served as the first Honored Queen, and was also the first Grand Bethel Representative. Jane Gebauer Kasten has been Bethel #39's only Grand Bethel Honored Queen. Over the years many members of Bethel #39 have served as Grand Bethel Officers and Representatives, and all have served with honor.

The Masons, Eastern Star, and White Shrine have been big boosters of Bethel #39, and they are grateful to them for their love and support.

The Bethel adopted Mr. and Mrs. Lee Harsell in 1974 as the Bethel Grand Parents. They have enjoyed visiting with them, at Christmas, other holidays, and throughout the year. Grandma Harsell passed away in May of 1978, but Grandpa Harsell still blesses Bethel #39 with his presence. The Bethel is very proud of being associated with this outstanding Masonic Family.

In the fall of 1974, the Bethel was honored to have an official visit for the State of Missouri from our Supreme Guardian, Pon Brown of Michigan. If you think girls get nervous during an official visit from the Grand Guardian, you should have been there that day. The excitement was high and the nerves frazzled, but somehow they made it through an unforgettable day.

Bethel #39 is growing again, and with the help of the Lord, they are looking forward to a bright and productive future.

BETHEL #42

On March 12, 1955, 34 girls were initiated and formed a new Bethel in Belton, Mo. The first Honored Queen was Jean Ann Jones, and her mother, Elizabeth Jones served as the first Guardian for a brief time. Mom Florence Fulton was installed as Guardian and Dad Hermann Tabor was installed as Associate Guardian and have been called the Mother & Dad of Bethel 42 The Bethel received its Charter on November 14, 1955. Since those first 34 girls were initiated over 45 years ago, an additional 417 girls have taken the Obligation and joined Bethel #42, a total of 451 members.

The members worked hard those first years recruiting new girls and raising money. They sold perfume, date & data books, pens and held rummage sales; but the most profitable moneymaker was manning the concession stand at the Belton Ball Park. It is reported that the girls made the work in the concession stand look like so much fun, they were often asked if other girls could work there, too. The "pat" answer was, "No, you have to be a Job's Daughter to be in here." And they would immediately be asked, "How do I become a Job's Daughter?" Many new members were recruited at the ballpark. The concession stand was profitable, in fact so profitable, that a second stand was built at a cost of $300, which was paid for by the Bethel. Minutes from a Bethel meeting during the summer schedule of working in the concession stands states, `no shorts are to be worn while working the concession stands."

Money from the stands helped the girls attend Grand Sessions, paid for most of their activities and Bethel expenses. A note in the minutes from 1960 states, "$300 will be used for train fare and special meals on the trip (to Grand Session)." Also in those minutes the girls are instructed, "No slacks are to be worn on the trip to St. Louis except in hotel rooms." In 1961 forty-four (44) girls registered for Grand Session from Bethel #42.

The Bethel was active and had enough members to have a pro-tem night and the Bethel Choir did the Bible Ceremony for many installations and the Flag was usually presented by a member of the DeMolay. It was a close-knit Masonic family in Belton and the Masons, Eastern Star, Job's Daughters and DeMolay worked hard to be successful. Bethel #42 donated $1,000.00 to the Mason's for the Building Fund for a new building for the Lodge and it was reported that the Job's Daughters contribution was the first donation for the new lodge. The Installation of Honored Queen Susan George was held in the newly built Masonic Lodge in December, 1963. The Bethel members' hard work in the concession stand every summer made the Bethel treasury flourish. Tile was purchased for the dressing room and baths downstairs in the Lodge and also the floors of the concession stands were covered with tile purchased by Bethel #42. A snow cone machine was also purchased to be used in the concession stands. Early minutes note that a punch bowl was purchased for $3.15 for use at Bethel meetings, and the members would adopt a family at Christmas time and furnish food and toys for that family.

Bethel #42 Socials have been much the same as other Bethels across the State. They went to the movies, the Ice Capades, the circus, Kidnap breakfasts, bowling, and skating. The minutes indicate that at a meeting in 1973, the girls voted to go ice-skating. The following meeting minutes state, "The ice-skating social was canceled because the ice melted, so we went roller-skating." Another notation talks about having a Walkathon - walking to a farm, camping out overnight, having a Church Service on Sunday morning and possibly walking back home. No indication of how far they would walk!

Members participated in "Go to Church Sunday," "Official Visits," and "Friendship Nights." One meeting was a joint meeting with Bethel #26. Minutes were read for each Bethel, two Treasurer's Reports, two sets of Receipts and Bills. The Bethel #26 officers sat on the floor with the officers from Bethel 42. There have been Mini-Sessions and Grand Sessions. There have been numerous Grand Bethel officers and Representatives, our present Honored Queen, Randi, being the latest, with Wendy Turner, a past Honored Queen of 42 serving on the Grand Bethel Advisory Board. We have had Thanksgiving Ball Royalty, and KCJD Line Officers; and the adults from Bethel #42 have held Grand Offices in the Grand Council of Missouri and one Past Honored Queen, our present Guardian, is a Past Grand Guardian of Missouri and the present Grand Bethel Guardian of Missouri.

The Bethel members participated in the Bible Ceremony for installations at Belton Masonic Lodge #450 and Belton Eastern Star #142; and in later years, the Eastern Star presented the Bible Ceremony at Bethel #42's installations. Minutes of August 1971 state, `Since the light bill was raised for the Masons, we (the Bethel) will help them by paying $10 a month."

After the loss of the Concession Stand contract, money making projects included selling candy, candles, Christmas cards, rolling papers, car washes, working in the Mason's fireworks stand, slave auctions, garage sales, chicken bird puppets, ice cream socials, dime-a-dip-dinner, and a Tupperware party. Bethel members participated in the Belton parade for years and then began making funnel cakes for sale not only for Belton's Fall Festival, but for Raymore and Raytown festivities as well.

The Bethel instituted the practice of asking a question on the ritual work. If the question was correctly answered, the daughter would win $1. If the question was missed, the next meeting, the question was worth $2, and the amount was increased by $1 each meeting until a right answer was given. They also had a "Traveling Basket," with a small gift. It was awarded one meeting and the girl who was chosen had to return it the next meeting, filled with a small gift.

In March, 1980, Bethel #42 celebrated its 25th Anniversary. Throughout the years, Past Honored Queens and members have returned to help and serve on the Bethel Council. Past Honored Queens have served as Guardians, some more than one time. Bethel #42 appreciates all the hard work and support given the daughters who have served over the 45 years, and all the friendships of other Bethel daughters who have helped us to try to keep Bethel 42 active. In December 1973, at the Honored Queen's last meeting, these words were noted at the bottom of the minutes, "Friends, they are the most sacred and least appreciated of all our belongings. A friend is a present you give yourself." This Honored Queen was Linda Kopfer, our own Linda Mosby. Thank you each one for being our friend.

Bethel #46

This information comes from Bethel #46's 25th Anniversary Program:.  If anyone had any additional information, please contact us.

Joyce Jackson Chastonay, MM #46, had stated that she believed her mother, Irene Mace Jackson, to have been the first HQ of Bethel #46, however we received an e-mail from Irene stating that she was indeed the second, not the first HQ, so the list below appears to be correct.  Joyce also informed us that one of the girls who was a special Job's Daughter, Charlotte Mace, died in a car wreck in 1987.
